THE HISTORY OF SWISS FARM

Swiss Farm was taken over by the Borlase family in 1946. In those days most of the land was used for dairy cattle and a few chickens. Customers would stay on the farm in bell tents, often visiting from London and storing their belongings in the farm buildings.

In 1968, Harold William Borlase handed the business to his son Stephen who set about building up a poultry business on the farm with 25,000 chickens and bringing in pedigree beef cattle. As farming became less and less profitable, Stephen turned his attention towards tourism and put together an ambitious schedule of building work and landscaping.

Nearly 30 years later, in 1997, the business was taken over by his son, Joseph, who has continued to improve the park by introducing new goals to ensure Swiss Farm provides the very best camping experience.

THE FUTURE FOR SWISS FARM

Onwards and upwards!

We will have a gleaming new park for the 2010 season with new toilet and shower facilities, a newly refurbished touring area, new roads, landscaping and tree planting.

The Farm

We have introduced animals to the farm for the first time in 15 years. Customers will now be able to see the following (depending on the season)

  • Rare breed Berkshire pigs
  • A pedigree heard of Sussex cattle
  • A mixture of sheep breeds
  • A new poultry area will be built in the spring, containing, ducks, turkeys, chicken and geese.

Our animals are all free range and are kept to the highest welfare standards and some produce will be available from the reception.

Fishing lake

We will be restocking the lake this spring with a mixture of Bream, Tench, Rudd and a few carp. We also intend upgrading this facility over the 2010 season with new swims.

Shop

We will once again try to obtain permission for a shop on the park. We have had several applications turned down by the local council however we intend to keep trying! We would like to provide produce grown locally and on the farm as well as basic essentials and camping equipment.

Our green credentials

We know that our customers come to us to spend time in the countryside and to enjoy being surrounded by nature so we would like to look after our part of the world. For this reason we have introduced the following initiatives:

Solar powered shower block

Solar: We have installed solar panels to heat the water from the showers

Water: We pump all our own water from a deep well on the park. This is then taken through a filtration plant and then an Ultra Violet machine to ensure that it passes all the necessary purity tests.

Recycling: We now have the facility to recycle plastics, paper and bottles
